Lovely work - did you use reference? And if so, which breed? It reminds me of an American quarterback - the quite short head. Beautifully delicate too - with the thumb I thought it was a photo-realistic drawing! :D

Yes, I used reference from a photo by Yann Arthus-Bertrands in his book Horses, but I can't remember the breed. I did a sketch of the horse first, then painted this from the sketch, and I think it was originally a brown horse, not dappled.

Oooh, that's *fun* to convert... I did that with my most recent... and I nearly went batty on occassion!
I think that's a good way of using a reference - sketching from it and then using the sketch as the basis for the painting - it's takes away some of the blatantly "I used a photo reference" feel that some works have.
